Due to competition for special effects studios among various films in development at the time, Richard Edlund used part of the budget to found Boss Film Studios, which employed a combination of practical effects, miniatures, and puppets to deliver the ghoulish visuals. Filming took place from October 1983 to January 1984, in New York City and Los Angeles. It was the first comedy film to employ expensive special effects, and Columbia Pictures, concerned about its relatively high $25–30 million budget, had little faith in its box office potential. Following Belushi's death in 1982, and with Aykroyd's concept deemed financially impractical, Ramis was hired to help rewrite the script to set it in New York City and make it more realistic. Like the movies the No-ghost sign is used all throughout the series. The animated logo seen in the first chapter of the film shows it having both legs, which wasn't quite the same as the design used later in the film which had the ghost not showing it's right leg at all. The logo was redesigned for the second film to giving it a different identity from the first film. The suit was for 50 million, plus the destruction of all Ghostbusters film prints, however it was dropped in 1986. Lawsuit ĭespite the final design avoiding an overt resemblance to Casper and related characters, Harvey Famous Cartoons sued Columbia Pictures over the use of the emblem, which bears some resemblance to " Fatso", one of the characters in Casper's Ghostly Trio. Michael Gross went to Brent Boates, one of the artists already working on concepts for the movie, to help with the design. The art direction and final design was done by Michael C. Dan Aykroyd conceived the logo in his original Ghost Smashers script. While Europe had the logo to the upper left, the rest of the world had the logo to the upper right. The logo design is loosely based on the no signs of Europe.
